Relive 'The Battle of Iwo Jima' as the US Marine Corps invade and eventually capture the volcanic island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Army.  The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the goal of capturing the entire island, including three Japanese-controlled airfields, to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands.  This five-week battle in 1945 comprised some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Pacific War.  The class is led by Nimitz Museum Education Director, Bryan Degner.  Bryan will be joined by Iwo Jima survivor, Fred Harvey, who received the Presidents Silver Star for courage and unselfish battlefield devotion to duty.  Fred will share first hand battlefield insights that he chronicled in his autobiography, "Hell Yes, I'd Do It Again."
