« back to classes page
Abraham Lincoln won a stunning victory on the third ballot of the Republican Party Convention in 1860. All three of his shocked rivals believed the better man had lost. Lincoln's subsequent election as president did not change their minds. The Republican victory without a single electoral vote from the 15 slave states provoked seven of them to secede and form the Confederate States of America. In this crisis, Lincoln took the unparalleled step of appointing to his cabinet all three of his shocked rivals.  Ward Jones will bring you riveting insights into Doris Kerns Goodwin’s “A Team of Rivals” one of the great books of our time. Ward will explore how Lincoln recruited his fiercest rivals into his cabinet and how they helped him govern through the Civil War. You will gain an interesting perspective on the greatness of our 16th President.  This story is filled with fascinating characters not often recognized in American History. It  culminates with Lincoln’s assassination and the immediate post war era. Come prepared to enjoy great history.
