Apollo 13, April 11-17, 1970...fifty years ago a near-disaster in space captured the attention of people around the world. Perhaps you've seen the feature movie directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. Now Gerry Griffin will share the inside stories of how the mission unfolded and what went on to get the astronauts safely back to earth.
Gerry was a Flight Director in Mission Control for Apollo 13. He and his Gold Team were there from the beginning to end of the mission. Mission Control in Houston was the "tip of the spear" in a gigantic effort across the USA to get the astronauts safely back to earth. Gerry will share "behind-the-scene" stories of what it took to accomplish an almost impossible task where failure was not an option.
Gerry later served as a consultant to the Apollo 13 motion picture and will share the backstories of how this film ultimately enhanced the legend of NASA's reputation for persistence and competence. Gerry's presentation will be followed by a Q&A period with the audience.
